STAND YOUR GROUND is only 2.5 minutes short but it is 2.5 minutes that teaches a disturbing message no-one is likely to forget anytime soon. From the moment the African-american male fears he's about to be murdred by a white cop, to the end when faces of (mostly young) Black men murdered by police are flashed in our faces, the intent is to disturb us with amerikkka's reality.
And so they do. What happens in the film happens to actors. But when Jamalo Jacob reads off the names of the faces being flashed before us it is a truly horrifying experience. I'm not going to let slip a spoiler; it is better for us all too see for ourselves -- especially young Black males. You will watch it and you will experience a terrifying revelation: prisons for Africans in america are not (and never have been) amerikkka's only places of torture and degradation for Afrikans in amerikkka.
Don't shoot this messenger, but as STAND YOUR GROUND clearly and honestly reflects, those prisons are but playgrounds compared to what Blackmen and women have to face daily, hourly, by the minute.
And the trouble Africans in america face outside those hellish brick structures isn't from some local troublemaker who makes small trouble: No, as this film depicts (and i dare anyone to call it a lie), the bullies, the real terrorists of today for Africans in america are the same terrifying monsters who lynched Blacks for the pure sexual and sadistic thrill of it all these hundreds of years. These monsters are called upon by white amerikkka to do the lynching for them. They think they're not guilty if the monster-in-blue performed the massacre.
STAND YOUR GROUND should be required viewing for young Black males so they can learn as early as possible that MALCOLM X was/still is a Relevant prophet. Non-violence is fine when you're not threatened with violence. This film demonstrates amerikkka's unending impossible dilemma: How do white folks exterminate a group that despite the miseries its suffered is too strong too bold, and yes, i'll say it: Too Godly.
The film stars JAMALO of Brothas Keepa as a driver pulled over by a vicious white cop. JAMALO is a skilled, nuanced actor i'm sure we'll see again. He conveys the fear in such a devastating accurate way, you might think you're watching the real horror happen. JAMALO maintains just the right balance in his voice between fear and strength. His eyes tell the whole story. Urge your children to watch this film. If your child feels comfortable inviting some white kids over along with their Black friends, you might discover that the white kids had no knowledge of white cops brutalizing Black men.
This film could be a learning tool, unless i'm being too idealistic, to help wash out the ignorance that the white parents have been filling their white kids minds with.
A good plan might be to show the film 4 or 5 times straight through. Then pause the film at certain key relevant points: why is the Black character talking on the phone to a stranger with such urgency? Freeze-frame every photo of the young Black men struck down by cops. Reflect on each photo, perhaps the children could write down the names of each face shown. Write reports on how each of the Black children died, who killed them and what was the outcome?
Were there any criminal charges brought against the men who murdered the innocent Black faces? Then engage them, the Black and white children, into a discussion of what they've learned, and have they drawn any conclusions. And gently introduce the children to some terminology.
Ask the white children what do they know about "Reparations". Ask the Black students what they know about police brutality, and so on and so forth.
Upon writing this i had no intention of describing a crude outline for study groups.
But it occurred to me, the foolish man i am, that there's an inequity upon many inequities: The Black children, depending on age, are at least somewhat familiar with police brutality. They are certainly aware through experience of racism white supremacy.
Informal study groups centered around this film and films like it can do nothing if open some eyes. Most of the Black children's eyes are open. History has shown us that the only way to teach white people about the suffering their ancestors caused, as well as the current atrocities caused probably by their neighbors is to show them not tell them. And in showing them, whether they be 5 yrs old or 55, force them to see the horrific images, the injustices and then ask them which group did what. I'm convinced tho that the 5 yr old white child will carry those images throughout the days and into the nights. And no, it's not child abuse; it's a forum to reach all the kids as early as possible: the white children obviously have a lot of catching up to do if they want to learn the whole truth.
